Erdős Problem #281

GPT-5.2 Pro produced a solution (17 Jan 2026); the problem turned out to have been solved already, by a different argument: Davenport and Erdős (1936) + Rogers (in Halberstam-Roth (1966)).

The problem

Let n1<n2<⋯n_1<n_2<\cdots be an infinite sequence such that, for any choice of congruence classes ai(modni)a_i\pmod{n_i}, the set of integers not satisfying any of the congruences ai(modni)a_i\pmod{n_i} has density 00.

Is it true that for every ϵ>0\epsilon>0 there exists some kk such that, for every choice of congruence classes aia_i, the density of integers not satisfying any of the congruences ai(modni)a_i\pmod{n_i} for 1≤i≤k1\leq i\leq k is less than ϵ\epsilon?

Statement quoted from erdosproblems.com/281, maintained by Thomas Bloom. Original source: [ErGr80,p.29]. Current status there: proved (Lean).

Caveats

The wiki's classifications are provisional and are not a benchmark. Many Erdős problems have never had a thorough literature review, so a result that looks new may later turn out to be known; some problems were also stated ambiguously or incorrectly. See the problem page for the full discussion.
